It was my brother’s birthday yesterday, and I thought to make today’s issue about him. Not that I love him so much as to dedicate a whole issue to writing about him (I clearly do not know why I’m doing this 😕). I guess there’s no harm in letting my heart win over my head in this case. I better get straight to the point before I snap out of whatever charm he blew in the air to make me write this.
My brother and I have come a long way. From Nsukka, where we were born, to Enugu, where we were raised, to Okposi, where we schooled, and now we are several kilometres apart. So many good memories, countless inside jokes, arguments, and constant exchanges of urgent 2ks, all of which I would not trade for anything (maybe I would for $999 billion😉). Let’s backtrack a bit.
I was less than 4 when he was born, but I can vividly remember most of the things that happened the day he was born. It was magical. I didn’t understand why everyone was happy and why we rushed home from church. But later that evening, the closest I got to understanding what was going on was that we now had a baby who was a boy, different from my other siblings and me. My reason for being happy was that this baby would get to stay in our house forever.
Well, that baby isn’t a baby anymore. He’s a lot of things that he wasn’t at the time of his birth, including being a creative and a comedian. But with all these things he’s become, one thing has remained the same: he’s still my brother (our brother), and the joy his birth brought to our hearts has multiplied.
Nonso, as you turn a year older, I pray that God will shine His face upon you and cause your life to be beautiful. I pray that your craft will open doors for you that you never imagined. And I pray that the Lord will take you by the hand and announce you to the world. You know how it is, only God can truly announce a man.
Happy birthday to you, Nonso.
