Advanced Defence Mechanism
I wish our bodies had some level of advanced defence mechanism. Like the way chameleons adapt to the colour of their surroundings and skunks release their stink gas to protect themselves from predators or ward off anything that poses a threat to them, I wish we had that level of defence too.
I understand that we are higher/supreme organisms (I didn’t want to say animals), but in terms of strength and craftiness, some of these lower organisms are superior. So, even in our supremacy, we are still their prey. Our comfort, peace, and existence are constantly threatened by them. Some sort of advanced defence mechanism would go a long way in keeping us safe.
Take mosquitoes, for example. Their size and ability to fly are, in my opinion, their advanced defence mechanisms. These traits give them the audacity to sing their tuneless melodies in our ears, suck our blood, and get away with it.
I wish we had a defence mechanism where, when mosquitoes came near, our bodies would release some sort of odourless gas to ward them off—or better still, kill them. That way, there would be no blood-sucking. I also wish our ears could produce gas alongside wax, which would only be released when insects trespass into them. But then, our bodies are not built that way.
This thought was born from a scary experience I had a few nights ago. I was asleep when an ant crawled into my ear. I was terrified because I had just cleaned my ears the day before, which meant there was no wax to trap the wandering ant. It moved freely in my ear, making me uncomfortable and disturbed. At that moment, countless terrifying thoughts ran through my mind, and I had no idea how to get it out. I was beginning to panic when, thankfully, the ant crawled out majestically—alive. Trust me, I wasted no time in squeezing the life out of that tiny monster.
That experience made me think: if our ears had an advanced defence mechanism, I would have slept soundly because the gas would have handled the ant. But then again, our bodies don’t work that way.
Have you ever had a similar experience? Or what advanced defence mechanism would you love to have?
